150th G.A. Comes to a Close

Friends for Jeff Spiegelman

And so we bid a “fond” farewell to the 150th General Assembly.  It certainly has been an “interesting” year.  I never thought, when I was first elected in 2012, that I would be sitting in my dining room, on a zoom meeting (what was “Zoom” in 2012?), until past midnight in order to close out a session.

-Congratulations to a friend and colleague Representative Quinn Johnson on your retirement.  Quinn was the first member of the General Assembly from across the aisle to reach out when I was first elected.  The northern half of the 11th District used to be the southern half of his 8th District and he wanted to bring me up to speed on some things that he was taking care so that I could continue to serve those same people that he had been.  He did not have to take the time to do that, but he did.  Good man.

-Before session started on June 30th there was a weekly meeting of the business subcommittee of the COVID working groups that the Governor set up.  I have been assigned to this subcommittee in order to bring the concerns of my caucus’ constituents to the decision makers during the State of Emergency (aka; JUST the Governor’s people…. We really should change that…..).  The purpose of the subcommittee is to explore what went right and what went wrong that caused a lockdown and the effects on people’s jobs and businesses.  We are working on how to avoid another lockdown and mitigate the damage.  My thoughts on the matter have been public in the papers, but I am interested in hearing from you as well.  These meetings are open to the public and the next one is Tuesday evening.  Please let me know if you would like more details.

-Please have a happy and safe Independence Day despite the less than “ideal” (I promise that is my last use of quotation marks in this email) conditions.  If you are going to set off fireworks, please be mindful of yourself, your family, your property, your neighbors, your neighbor’s property, etc etc.

-God Bless America and the State of Delaware.  Despite our challenges right now, I love you both.  As with every July 4th, I will be watching the musical 1776 at some point during the day.  Saul and Elianah love it.

-Finally, campaign season, such as it is with the Phase II restrictions, is upon us.  On Sunday, we will do a campaign update.  It has been my honor to serve the 11th District in the 150th General Assembly.  With your support, I would like to serve again in the 151st.

-Enjoy your week.
